Design Wall Monday

Taking up the challenge given out by Bonnie Hunter, I have been using 3" bow tie blocks as my leader/ender project.  This month they have been my only project. (Other than 3 b.o.m. and a sew along.)  I make a bunch of 3" blocks while putting together a few (16) to make a 12" block.  So they have become a leader ender for themselves.

Now comes the time to make a layout decision.  I am leaning toward the diagonal rows and not the barn raising.  The lighter blocks get lost in the barn raising layout.  And it seems really busy.  Almost hurts to look at it.

                                              Diagonal layout.

                                             Close up view.

                                           Barn Raising layout.

                                            Close up view.

I only have half of the 12" blocks done.  And still need to make 170 3" blocks. But as of now I am able to see it all coming together.  But I will need to make a decision.  The barn raising would need a border put on it.  If I go with the diagonal it won't have a border.  Hmmmmmm.

Be sure to check out all of the great design walls at Patchwork Times .

Happy Sewing.

I like the Barn Raising setting. The "circles" made by the change in the block direction force the eye to come back into the quilt, in contrast to the sharp diagonal setting which visually goes off into the distance somewhere. (Does that make sense? It does to me!) I think the lighter blocks add a dappling (think about Impressionist paintings).

I agree with Nann, I really like the Barn Raising setting.

I'm no help because I like both. I would probably lean toward the one with no border.

I like both too! I'm amazed at all the blocks you have finished!

I like the diagonal set but I have seen a few other sets out there in blog land too, google images for Bowtie quilt setting and there are so many ideas it makes me want to make them all!

Two great choices for these tiny little bow ties! I made a diagonal set one a few years ago and loved it.

I love the barn raising layout. It's REALLY lovely. Both settings would be awesome, though.

I vote for the barn raising, but would be happy with either. Lots of work but the end results are stunning.

On the diagonal, you could alternate with plain blocks, and give the eye a place to rest.

I've done the barn-raising with bow ties, and I off-set the center into the upper right quadrant, just to be different, and to make a rectangle shaped quilt. I like your barn raising as you have it at well. If you wanted to take the time, you could alternate light and dark rounds in it, if you have enough lights. Any way you set it, it will be spectacular.

Both look good so n the end it will come down to your personal preference.

I like the barn raising but especially love the scrappiness of it

I love both layouts, but if I did the barn raising, I would alternate light bowtie rounds and dark rounds (if that makes any sense!). What a great leader/ender!
